Brent Mydland Finds His Voice!
Brent Mydland added a powerful upper harmony to the refrain of Mexicali Blues. His voice would transform their sound in the 1980s -- but not at first.
...
/>As Brent played his first live gig with the Dead on April 22,1979, they included Mexicali Blues in their lineup. But while his Hammond organ is readily apparent in that performance, we did not yet hear that tenor voice. The Dead played about a half dozen gigs between April and the end of June that featured Mexicali Blues. On June 28, I thought I heard Brent in the refrain. On this program, thanks to a crisp Charlie Miller master soundboard upgrade, we hear that refrain properly for the very first time. Brent Mydland lives in these recordings!

so differently when following help on the way > slipknot than half-step as it does here. either way it's a treat every time. The second set Sugaree is a relative rarity - not unheard of, but pretty unusual placement. The second set of this show seems to rattle around a bit before they lock on to an idea. But once they do, it's a pretty good one. Charlie Miller's work is uniformly exquisite. When in doubt, listen to the version he has touched.
Incredible sound quality and the band is just on. A rock solid show from start to finish. The Half-Step Miss. opener is one of my favorite versions of

the tune that Jerry left us with. You will know what I mean when Tiger roars.....You can really feel Phil, too. The Stella is everything it was meant to be. Shakedown encore?? Yum yum.

bass cuts out
Went straight to the Stella Blue and found it non-listenable. The bass did this weird cut out that makes the speaker sound blown.
